Telecommunications Continuity: Maintaining Indian SIMs in a Global Context

Telecom Analyst2024-03-22

The Criticality of the Indian MSISDN

In the Indian digital ecosystem, the Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Number (MSISDN) is more than a communication tool; it is a primary authentication factor. From UPI (Unified Payments Interface) registration to Aadhaar-based e-KYC and banking OTPs, maintaining an active Indian number is a non-negotiable requirement for NRIs.

International Roaming: The Technical Reality

Modern Indian telecom providers (Jio, Airtel, Vi) have extensive roaming agreements globally. A key technical nuance often overlooked by NRIs is that **receiving SMS while roaming is generally free** in most jurisdictions (including Europe, North America, and the Middle East). As long as your phone registers on a partner network, OTPs will arrive without depleting your balance.

Commercial Strategies for Number Preservation

Indian regulations permit telecom operators to disconnect and reassign numbers that have been inactive for more than 90 days. To prevent this 'churn', NRIs should adopt one of the following strategies:

  • The Annual Plan Strategy: For Airtel and Vi, subscribing to a basic 365-day validity plan (often around ₹1799-₹2999) is the most reliable "set-and-forget" method.
  • The Jio Top-up Method: Reliance Jio numbers often remain active as long as there is a minimal monetary balance. Loading ₹500 in 'Talktime' balance can sustain the number for extended periods, though a minor data recharge every 6 months is recommended to signal activity.
  • eSIM Transition: If your device supports it, convert your physical Indian SIM to an eSIM. This allows you to keep your Indian line active as a secondary line on your primary foreign device without swapping physical cards.

The Pre-Departure Checklist

  1. Ensure International Roaming (IR) is Active: This must be toggled within the provider's app while still in India or while the SIM has a signal.
  2. WiFi Calling: Many modern handsets support WiFi calling. This allows you to place calls and send SMS at Indian domestic rates even while abroad, provided you are connected to a WiFi network.

Security Warning

Avoid letting your Indian number expire. If reassigned, the new owner could potentially gain access to services linked to your mobile number if you haven't updated your records across all banks and government services.
